The AC mains voltage is transformed by a transformer to the appropriate rectifier input voltage, which is then filtered and smoothed using an electrolytic capacitor. The output voltage may vary slightly depending on the AC input voltage and DC load. The construction of these 48V power supplies is robust and limited to the essentials. These 48V power supply units are sufficient for controlling valves, relays, contactors and Manget switches and for most PLC controls.

The 48V switched-mode power supply also converts the mains voltage into a regulated 48VDC output voltage, but has a higher efficiency and a smaller size. After filtering and rectification, the AC input voltage is converted into a high-frequency, wave-like pulsating voltage using a pulse-width modulated semiconductor switch and transformed into the required 48V voltage on the secondary side by using a transformer. It is then rectified and filtered again. The higher-performance power supply units are all equipped with Power Factor Correction (PFC).
