Here, the AC mains voltage is transformed by a transformer to the appropriate rectifier input voltage, which is then filtered and smoothed by means of an electrolytic capacitor. Depending on the AC input voltage and DC load, the output voltage may vary slightly. The design of these 12V power supplies is robust and limited to the essentials. These 12V power supplies are sufficient for controlling valves, relays, contactors and Manget switches and for most PLC controls.

The 12V switched-mode power supply also converts the mains voltage into a regulated 12VDC output voltage, but has a higher efficiency and a smaller size. After filtering and rectification, the AC input voltage is converted into a high-frequency wave-shaped pulsating voltage by a pulse-width modulated semiconductor switch and transformed to the 12V voltage required on the secondary side by means of a transformer. It is then rectified and filtered again. The power supply units with higher power ratings are all equipped with Power Factor Correction (PFC).
